Quick-steps for establishing a successful L&D strategy

Ever thought about creating an L&D strategy? But you don’t know how to start? Here are the quick-steps for establishing a successful L&D strategy:

  • 1

    Needs Analysis

  • 2

    Setting goals

  • 3

    Designing learning solutions

  • 4

    Communication and implementation

  • 5

    Evaluation and feedback

  • 6

    Continuous improvement

Needs Analysis

Simply put, identify employee learning needs. Do a competency analysis, conduct interviews with employees, collect feedback and analyze e.g. performance data. You perform this by specific function or cluster of functions. This provides insight into deficits in needed knowledge and provides insight into skills needed for now, but certainly for the future.

Setting goals

Determine specific, measurable and achievable goals that can be achieved through deployment of an L&D strategy. Consider increasing customer satisfaction, improving individual performance, promoting leadership or developing (technical) skills. Perhaps you have other specific goals you want to achieve? You can also name those here.

Designing learning solutions

Choose the most appropriate learning solutions/learning resources to meet identified needs. Consider the target audience you want to reach or the systems available. Options include classroom training, e-learning, VCT, mentoring programs, job rotation, etc.

Communication and implementation

Communicate with your employees about choices made within the L&D strategy and implement the chosen learning solutions. Continue to communicate about available development programs and ensure engagement and motivation in the learning process.

Evaluation and feedback

Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of the L&D strategy through performance indicators and employee feedback. Keep actively looking for areas for improvement and adjust the L&D strategy accordingly.

Continuous improvement

A strategy is never static. Follow trends and developments in L&D and stay on top of changing organizational and employee needs. This keeps your L&D strategy up-to-date and accepted.

By following these steps, you can create an effective L&D strategy aimed at improving organizational performance and employee development.
